USB3-HUB3ME not working on USB 2.0

Hi there,

I have recently purchased a USB3-HUB3ME and I am trying to use it on a Linux Debian 10 Machine that has a USB 2.0 port. As soon as I add any device to the USB Hub (I have tried pendrive, keyboard, mouse dongle) I get the following error via dmesg logs:
[84615.112376] usb 1-2.2: new low-speed USB device number 3 using xhci-hcd
[84625.311904] xhci-hcd xhci-hcd.0.auto: xHCI host not responding to stop endpoint command.
[84625.314527] xhci-hcd xhci-hcd.0.auto: Assuming host is dying, halting host.
[84625.337665] xhci-hcd xhci-hcd.0.auto: Host not halted after 16000 microseconds.
[84625.339570] xhci-hcd xhci-hcd.0.auto: Non-responsive xHCI host is not halting.
[84625.346871] xhci-hcd xhci-hcd.0.auto: Completing active URBs anyway.
[84625.353451] xhci-hcd xhci-hcd.0.auto: HC died; cleaning up
[84625.359231] usb 1-2-port2: couldn’t allocate usb_device
[84625.364439] usb 1-2: USB disconnect, device number 2

Is this an issue with USB 2.0? Will USB3-HUB3ME only work on USB 3.0?

Thanks in advance

Hello Antonior,

Thanks for reaching out to us. I’m sorry for the trouble here, and I’d be glad to help you. This hub is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 ports on host computers, and USB 2.0 accessories.

But, I would suggest we unplug the wireless mouse dongle while we test the hub as interference can occur between the 2.4ghz signal from the wireless dongle, and USB 3.0.

What happens if you plug the hub in and just a wired accessory? Are you able to get connectivity?

Likewise, what happens if you plug an Ethernet cable in from the hub to your router? Are you able to get an internet connection?

Are you able to try the hub on another computer to see if you get the same/similar result? This would be helpful, but, I understand if you don’t have another computer readily available to test.

We’ll want to try and identify and eliminate as many variables as we can. I look forward to hearing back from you.

Thank you,

Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for your reply. Please find below the answer for your questions.

After connecting the USB keyboard it doesn’t work and I get this logs, which are similar with the logs I posted above:
[70943.338202] usb 1-2.2: new low-speed USB device number 8 using xhci-hcd
[70953.713716] xhci-hcd xhci-hcd.0.auto: xHCI host not responding to stop endpoint command.

[70953.761059] usb 1-2-port2: couldn’t allocate usb_device
[70953.766389] usb 1-2: USB disconnect, device number 3

Likewise, what happens if you plug an Ethernet cable in from the hub to your router? Are you able to get an internet connection?

This is the output from when I disconnect the ethernet port from the computer and connected to the USB hub ethernet port. It doesn’t work either.
[69756.678844] meson6-dwmac ff3f0000.ethernet eth0: Link is Down
[69843.715012] meson6-dwmac ff3f0000.ethernet eth0: Link is Up - 1Gbps/Full - flow control rx/tx

Are you able to try the hub on another computer to see if you get the same/similar result? This would be helpful, but, I understand if you don’t have another computer readily available to test.

On Mac, keyboard and ethernet are working. The Wireless mouse dongle works, but the mouse is jumping around, so this matches to what you mentioned about the known interference.

If I run lsusb before connecting the keyboard, I get this reply:
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 2109:2817 VIA Labs, Inc.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

After the Via Labs device is gone:
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Is there something that I could check on my Linux distro that you know of?

Thanks again,
Antonio
