usb_vga_165 Display is black

I have a Windows 7 machine that I added the usb_vga_165 to. I installed 7.8 and plugged in usb_vga_165. The second monitor came up and worked properly. I rebooted the machine. I had the user try to log in but both screens are black. When I unplugged the usb_vga_165 and the video card monitor came on. The user logged in successfully. I plugged in the usb_vga_165 and both monitors went black yet the green power button’s stayed on.

What do I do?

Hi Jake,

Thanks for posting.

Quite unusual behavior that you’re experiencing on this system. My hunch would be that there’s an odd glitch relating to the DisplayLink drivers interacting with the built-in graphics drivers on the system.

Uninstalling, running the DisplayLink cleaner, then reinstalling the drivers would be a good first step. (I’d suggest going with 7.7M4 rather than 7.8 to see if things behave differently.)

-Disconnect the USB adapter

-Uninstall DisplayLink Core software from Control Panel->Programs

-Download and run the DisplayLink cleaner tool, found here:
http://displaylink.com/support/sla.ph…

-Once the Cleaner has been run, reboot (even if not prompted to)

-Now download and run 7.7M4, found here:
http://www.displaylink.com/support/sl…

***Please be on the lookout for any compatibility warnings during installation, and make note of them if they appear***

-Reboot, even if not prompted to

-Once you’re back in Windows, reattach the USB adapter and see if the behavior changes.

If things continue to misbehave as they did previously, please collect a set of system logs using our tool on the following page:
http://plugable.com/support/plugdebug

Once you’ve collected the logs please email to support@plugable.com and we’ll have a look to see what the best steps will be.

Thanks!
Gary

I uninstalled the DisplayLink driver using Control Panel | Programs and Features
I rebooted the machine
I ran the DisplayLink cleaner tool from the link provided
I rebooted the machine
Installed 7.7M4 from the link provided
I rebooted the machine
I attached the USB adapter - it installed the driver from Windows update
**There were no compatibility errors**
Both monitors came on
I adjusted the display setting so the new monitor was on the left and was the main monitor
I moved the toolbar and desktop icons to the old monitor on the right - user preference
The user opened eMail and the screen went black - the power indicator was green
We could not see the eMail as it had opened in the new screen
Opened IE and it also opened on the new screen
Unplugged the USB adapter and Outlook and IE were visible on the old monitor
I downloaded from the link provided and ran your log collection tool
I sent an eMail with subject usb_vga_165 Display is black to support@plugable.com
