USB-C Front port speed

Hi, I have an ssd USB-C Raid hard drive (not Thunderbolt 3) that usually gets about 850mb/s read and write when connected directly to my MacBook Pro 2017 and about the same speed when connected to a Lacie Big dock. But when connected to the front USB-C port on the TBT3-UD1-85W I’m only getting about 300mb/s. Is that normal? Shouldn’t a gen 1 usb-c port (5Gbps) get close to double that? Thanks.

Hello Erik,

Thank you for contacting Plugable support! Sorry to hear about this issue. I’d be more than happy to assist you.

Per the specifications for this dock on our website: https://plugable.com/products/tbt3-ud1-85w/ The front USB-C port is USB 3.1 Gen 1, which is 5Gbps:

5Gbps real world is about 500MBps maximum. There will be some overhead. When directly connected to your MBP with a Gen 2 connection you will of course see faster speeds.

Please don’t hesitate to let us know of other questions.

Thanks again for contacting Plugable support and best wishes!
