USB-C Cable with Triple Display Dock vs Longer Amazon Cables

I recently purchased a Plugable USB-C Triple Display Docking Station (UD-ULTCDL). It took me a few hours to get set up because I was using a 10 ft USB-C cable I purchased from Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01…) because the cable that came with the dock was too short. Hours in trying every combination of monitor and port, I decided to use the (too short) USB-C cable that came with the dock and everything worked with no issues!

Does anyone know what the difference is between the USB-C cable shipped with the dock and something like the one in the link above purchased from Amazon (other than the length)? I’d love to get a longer cable so I can rearrange my desk/setup.

Thanks

Hi Reggie,

Thanks for contacting Plugable support. I’d be happy to assist you.

The cable you bought is not fully spec’d for use with our dock. If you read the bullet points on Amazon they mention “Data transfer speeds up to 480Mbps which is USB 2.0 Standard. If your hard dive is Samsung T3 Portable SSD(usb c 3.1), please buy the usb 3.0 type a to type c cable or usb c 3.1 gen 2 cable.”

So the cable you bought is USB 2.0 only. Our cable is capable of USB 3.1 Gen 2. It’s a shame they don’t call that out better!

If you need a longer cable the longest we’ve tested to be compatible is our two meter Thunderbolt 3 cable:
