I am trying to hook up a Surface Book 2 and a desktop to a set of three LG 4k monitors
I recently purchased a USB-C 4K Triple Display Dock (for my home office) and a USBC-6950 DP for the two monitors at my work office.
At the home office I have a desktop connected to the DP ports on the monitors and was hoping to connect the Surface Book using the 4K Triple via DP to HDMI on the monitors.
Firing them up in Windows 10 the max resolution they will run is 2048 x 1152. If I hook them up DP to DP I get the expected 3480 x 2160. Does this mean I need to use something like the Active DP to HDMI adaptor if I want to connect the 4K triple to the HDMI ports on the monitors?
Those adapters will allow up to 4K @ 60Hz from the two DP ports. (Please note the built in HDMI port is 4K capable, but just at 30Hz due to USB-C bandwidth limitations.)
Please don’t hesitate to let us know of other questions.
Thanks again for contacting Plugable support and best wishes!
I have one additional question then… Does that mean I don’t need an adapter for the connection from the HDMI port on the dock? Just want to be certain because I have been going round and round trying to get this all working (to be fair this all started long before I got to your products). I just want to make sure I go get all the adapters I need to finally get these monitors all up and running.
“Does that mean I don’t need an adapter for the connection from the HDMI port on the dock?”
That’s absolutely correct! It won’t need an adapter, you can just go straight HDMI cable from dock to monitor and you’ll be able to get 4K @ 30Hz from it.
The DP ports are the only ones that need active adapters in this scenario.
