I am unable to get anything into focus in the 40 - 175x range. no problem below 40x or above ~200x. a few tests suggest that the clear plastic at the end is too long. if i insert a small object inside the plastic rim i can get it in focus. problem is that that’s not an acceptable solution for my needs. have considered taking a Dremel to it to shorten it. Thoughts?

The range at which you can focus, and the magnification, actually depends on the distance to the object that’s being viewed.
What you can try is moving the object a little further away from the microscope. This should allow you to set your focus and magnification to obtain the sight picture you’re looking for.
