USB 2.0 to Ethernet E1000, Windows XP, device cannot start, error code 10

Dear Support,

Your product, plugable USB 2.0 Ethernet Adapter E1000 will not work with my Windows XP PC. I get a yellow exclamation mark in the Windows device manager. The device status reads: “This device cannot start. (Code 10).”

My installation procedure:

  1. Installed drivers from plugable.com “2013-08-Plugable-ASIX-USB-Ethernet-Windows-Universal.exe”

  2. plugged the device into a USB 2.0 port

  3. Windows recognizes device as “ASIX AX88178 USB2.0 to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter”

  4. Device manager shows exclamation mark with error code given above.

No amount of restarting the computer or changing the order of my installation procedure seems to work. What is going on here?
