UD-ULTCDL with or without DVI? Code used for different products?

I had purchased ud-ultcdl a long time ago, always under the assumption it had a 100W USB-C output. (it was the main requirement) I have always used a device < 50W with it and never had any issues. However recently I plugged in a laptop requiring a minimum of 100W USB-C and noticed that it wouldn’t charge. When checking the product page for ud-ultcdl (which also advertises it as a 100W) I saw a completely different product. Mine has a DVI output - as shown in other pictures here on this forum but the product page shows a different one. I only realize now that mine has a 20V 3A input. It also clearly states https://plugable.com/UD-ULTCDL on the base plate. This is making it hard to figure out where to get the right drivers, and also a bit misleading imo as I bought it based on the website specs. Can someone explain what is going on, did I get a counterfeit? mislabeled product? or was it an internal change. Thx

Thanks for reaching out, and I can definitely clear this up.

The UD-ULTCDL you have is the Mk1 version of the dock. A few years ago we released the Mk2 version, which includes updated specs and additional features (such as the 100W host charging you’re seeing advertised now).

What you have is absolutely an official Plugable product, not a counterfeit or mislabeled unit—it’s simply the earlier revision of the model. Since then, the Mk1 has been discontinued in favor of the Mk2.

As for drivers, both versions of the dock use the same DisplayLink software, which you can always find at Plugable’s driver page.

Hope this clears things up, but let us know if you have any other questions!

Sincerely,

Mychal

Thanks for your prompt reply Mychal, it does clear things up.

My guess then, is that I must have bought it at a time when the mk2 was introduced on your product page, replacing the older one, while mk1 was still stocked and available for sale elsewhere, leading me to believe I was buying the 100W unit based on the product number alone.

My bad for not taking a closer look I guess, but it’s often the case where sellers’ pictures are for reference only and can hardly be trusted, so the only thing to go by is the product number, unless I’m missed some other identifier which was available at the time of purchase.

If that’s the case I would recommend against using the exact same product number for a product with different specs as there may be edge cases where people end up buying the wrong product.
