UD-3900PDZ and Surface Pro 5 1796

I recently purchased a Plugable UD-3900PDZ for use with a Surface Pro 5 (model 1796) running Windows 10 1809. As this model of Surface Pro does not have a native USB C port, I also purchased a Surface Connect (Surface’s proprietary power connector) to USB C cable (this one). Finally, I installed the latest DisplayLink 9.3 M3 driver found here.

Unfortunately, when I connect the Surface Pro to the UD-3900PDZ, none of the devices attached to the docking station are recognized by Windows (wireless mouse with USB transceiver, USB keyboard & 3x HDMI monitor connections). However, the PD component connects successfully, as the Surface Connect LED light is activated, and the battery charging icon is displayed in the Windows Notification Center.

I’m hoping that someone can offer some assistance with this issue. Thanks!

Hi Ari,

Thank you for reaching out to us, I am sorry, this docking station is not compatible with the Surface Pro 5.

The UD-3900PDZ requires a computer with a native USB-C port that supports DisplayPort Alternate Mode and USB-C Power Delivery. The adapter from Amazon is a charging cable that only supports power and does not support either data or video from the surface connect port to the docking station.

The Surface Pro 5 is compatible with our USB 3.0 Dual Display Docking Stations, like the UD-3900H USB 3.0 Horizontal Docking Station ( https://plugable.com/products/ud-3900h ) which can support two external displays. A third display can be connected directly to the Surface Pro 5’s Mini DisplayPort output, or to the docking station using an additional USB 3.0 to HDMI Graphics Adapter ( https://plugable.com/products/uga-2khdmi ) for a display up to 1920x1200 resolution, or ( https://plugable.com/products/uga-4khdmi ) for a display up to 4K resolution at 30Hz refresh rate.

I am sorry this docking station is not compatible with the Surface Pro 5, and I would be happy to help return this dock. Please email our support team directly at ‘support@plugable.com’ with the subject line ‘Ticket #319793 - Attention Pat’ and include your Amazon Order ID ( available from Amazon.com/orders ) in the body of the email and I can help to start the return process.

I am sorry for any confusion this may have caused and look forward to hearing back from you.

Thank you,

Pat
