I had a DVI to HDMI cable plugged into my laptop and it was working fine for me to extend the display. After connecting the DVI to HDMi to the plugable UD-3900 the second monitor no longer is being detected.

I’m sorry to hear that the DVI to HDMI cable isn’t working with your docking station, that should be a supported setup so I’d like to see what the issue might be. I’ll ask you to run our PlugDebug tool so we can review your setup, so I’ll email you directly to follow up with those directions.
Once we have an update on the issue we’ll update the thread here to share the progress on this issue.
