The power switch does not seem to do anything. Once plugged in and connected the unit operates in both off and on?

That is definitely not a normal behavior - you may have received a defective unit. Sorry about that!
Please email support@plugable.com with your Order ID and we can send a replacement. We’ll be sure to test the on/off switch before we send it to you.
For any other readers, the power should have to be toggled on before the dock can read a disk. The dock’s LED will light up once it 1) has power, 2) has a good USB connection, and 3) has a compatible SATA drive inserted.
