Plugable USB Audio microphone jack does not work on mac mini (OSX 10.9.5)

I have a (brand new) Sennheiser Gaming One headphones connected through the plugable USB Audio Adapter to a mac mini. The sound works but the microphone does not. I tested the microphone on a windows PC and it works fine. I checked the microphone tip and it is “TRS” which should work.

I tested the adapter on a Windows 8 machine and the microphone still does not work.

At this point I assume the product I received is defective.
