Periodic loss of volume control

Not too long ago, I upgraded from a UD-ULTCDL to a UD-ULTC4K. For some reason, since then, I periodically lose control over the volume of the speakers attached to my dock. They still play and the sound device in the system tray says I am using “plugable audio,” but changing the volume on the PC no longer changes the volume of the speakers. I have to turn the physical dial on the speakers to change it.

Any hypothesis about how to fix this or the cause? Thanks.
