no signal to samsung monitor connected by hdmi to surface pro

I’ve connected my Surface Pro to the plugable and connected my samsung syncmaster s24b300 monitor with an hdmi cable. The monitor just flashes hdmi/analog on its screen for a little while when I turn it on, but otherwise the screen is black. Any advice on what to do?

Please include the model of the Plugable device you are using, the model of your laptop and the model of the monitor (if different than the Samsung Syncmaster s24b300 referenced in this thread).
