Need to format a IMac drive from a windows 10 machine and need advice

I am trying to format a hard drive to install into an Imac using my plugable HDD unit from a laptop running Windows 10.OSX format is different then i am use to but am sure a way is found to achieve the formatting.Thank you in advance for your help.

Mac and Windows operating systems use different file systems that are usually not compatible with each other.

So if you format a hard drive in Windows, it will not show up in a Mac without being reformatted (which erases all existing data).

There are some paid Windows 3rd party software programs that claim to format hard drives to the correct Mac format.

However, the simplest solution is to do the following:

  • back up any important data on the hard drive
  • move hard drive to new computer and operating system
  • reformat the hard drive via operating system’s native file system
  • migrate data back over to hard drive from your backup location
