My win 8 system will not boot (hangs up at the twirling circles) with 7 port 3.0 usb hub plugged in with no devices plugged into the hub

Once booted, if I plug in the 7 port hub everything works great. If I restart, it usually works. If I power down and reboot, it fails until I unplug the 7 port hub.
