Microsoft Surface Book & Dell Docking Station

I’m looking for a docking station to support a Microsoft Surface Book (Mini DisplayPort) as well as a Dell XPS 13. We are currently planning to use HP VH240a 23.8" monitors. I was thinking of using a Mini DisplayPort to USB C cord for the Surface. What do you recommend?

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Plugable support! I’d be more than happy to assist you.

Unfortunately an mDP to USB-C adapter wont allow you to connect the dock. mDP is for video only where USB-C can carry video, data, and charging. Ultimately the Surface Book is unsupported by our more advanced docking stations. The only models we would be able to recommend would be our USB 3.0 docks. The XPS 13 if it is the 9350 or newer would be supported by most of our USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 docks.

If you’re looking for a dock to share between both systems, I’d go with a universal model like this one: http://plugable.com/products/ud-3900

Please don’t hesitate to let us know of other questions.

Thanks again for contacting Plugable support and best wishes!

Thanks! How do you suggest to go from Mini DisplayPort to USB B?

Hi!

“How do you suggest to go from Mini DisplayPort to USB B?”
That’s the point I’m trying to convey, unfortunately you cannot. Mini DisplayPort is a video only connector. USB is data. The two do not speak the same language and the Surface cannot be adapted to support a dock over its mDP port - it’s just technically not possible.

You can however connect a dock to the regular USB-A port on the Surface (via an included USB-B to USB-A that ships with our USB 3.0 docks).

Something like this would work: http://plugable.com/products/ud-3900

Thanks!
Josh
