I bought a USBC-6950M. Downloaded MacOS driver from the Plugable USBC-6950 website, followed the instructions.
No dice, no detection of the device from the display link software. One odd thing - I was not prompted to Share the screen record. When I went into system settings the toggle was already on. I’ve turned it off, back on, restarted the computer with it off and then turned it back on - no dice.
I used the Displaylink removal tool - and also simply , reinstalled multiple times, same problem. I’ve reset my mac multiple times, unplugged the device for anywhere from 30 seconds to 15 minutes, and just now 30 minutes. It’s there - i see it under the USB system report. The little light between HDMI ports is on. Whats the deal? Anyone have solutions?
Thank you for reaching out, and I am sorry to hear of this issue. It sounds like you have taken the necessary steps in order to get the software installed. One thing to consider is that the adapter will require a direct HDMI to HDMI connection to your monitors, so we will want to ensure that this connection is being made.
That said, in our experience helping customers, most of the time, these kinds of display issues are related to the installation of the DisplayLink Manager App. The two most common issues we see are the DisplayLink Manager App has been installed incorrectly, or it is not currently actively running.
I recommend stepping through the installation process one more time to see if this helps (apologies in advance for any redundancy here). Below, I provide our helpful installation guide that can step you through this process:
**Please note that the installation process does require certain permissions to be set in order for the app to install properly, so we do strongly advise to follow each step carefully.
If this does not help, please feel free to reach out to us directly here at this link to open a support ticket: https://plugable.com/pages/support and we would be happy to take a closer look into this matter.
Hey, MIchael. Thank you for the reply. So only HDMI to HDMI? I cannot go HDMI to a USBC, correct? The monitor extensions I am going into are USB-C Monitor ins. It’s like, the dope laptop monitor extenders that slaps onto the main laptop monitor and come out either side. If the the 6950m requires HDMI to HDMI, which of your products would you recommend that would work with my new setup?
You are correct. The USBC-6950M requires an HDMI to HDMI connection in order to work. Unfortunately, it will not work with an HDMI to USB-C connection because the USB-C connection utilizes a different video protocol.
To help clarify, your USBC-6950M uses DisplayLink, which is a dynamic video compression technology that requires software in order to mimic the system’s video capabilities and then transmit the video across a USB port such as USB-A or USB-C.
A monitor that accepts a USB-C video input is typically referred to as a “full-featured” USB-C port that is capable of transmitting and receiving audio/video over either a DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt protocol signal.
DisplayLink differs from DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt so that is where the issue is with this connection.
In order to connect your monitor that accepts USB-C, since you have a Mac system, Macs support Thunderbolt, so in theory, you should be able to connect your monitor directly to one of the USB-C ports on your Mac, and it should light up the display.
Would you happen to know the exact make and model of the monitor(s) you are trying to connect and which Mac system you have (e.g., MacBook Air M1, MacBook Pro M3, etc.)
I would be happy to see if we could find a solution for you here.
