Lenovo Yoga 920 Simple Setup

Okay, just went through a lot of pain with Lenovo’s USBC dock and my Yoga 920 and I need to start over. I would like to support a single monitor HDMI or Display port, Network, USB3 ports. I also want to charge the Yoga 920 over the same USBC connection so my kid just needs to connect the USBC connector and push the on button and go. This will be 1080p or above. No crazy 2-3 monitor setups. Its a college laptop only. I want reliable, first and most as simple to use. I dont care if it’s its a generic USB3 video solution. The Yoga is having lots of issues with video and USBC, at least with lenovo’s dock which I have first hand knowledge. Suggestions?

Hi Ken,

Thanks for posting!

Based on your requirements, our new USB-C Mini Docking station (UD-CAM) sounds like it would be a good fit for your needs -> https://plugable.com/products/ud-cam

When used with a compatible USB-C system, the UD-CAM will provide one additional HDMI display (up to 4K resolution at 30Hz refresh) as well as additional USB 3.0 ports, wired Ethernet, audio output and will charge the host system.

I mention ‘compatible’ as we don’t have a Yoga 920 in our test lab so we cannot guarantee our dock would work, but in looking at the Yoga’s specifications online I believe it will. Should you elect to proceed with a purchase and find that the dock does not meet your needs or expectations, we do offer a 30-day no-hassle return policy for all products sold by Plugable and fulfilled by Amazon.

Please let us know if you have any additional questions!

Okay, I got the unit today and had some success and some failure. The HDMI monitor works as does USB1/2 devices. But my USB3 drives do not show up. I am attaching a screen shot of the device manager and a USBView Log so you can see what usb devices are connected. This is almost the same issue I had with the Lenovo docking station.

Oh, and the plugable network controller in the hub doesn’t show up either.

Looking at this more, it’s almost as if the Alt mode is taking over all of the High speed links and not allowing one link to be USB3 and the other link to be HDMI. This would explain why I am not getting any USB devices connected to the Plugable box. I dropped my resolution to 1080p and still nothing.

Hi Ken,

Thanks for getting back with the updates, appreciate the additional detail you provided.

Looking at everything in aggregate and based on your description a few quick questions…first, can you confirm that you are only using the USB-C cable included in the box with the dock to connect it to your system? I ask because other cables could cause similar problems.

Second, does the behavior change if you connect the dock to the ‘other’ remaining Thunderbolt 3/USB-C port of your system?

Thank you!

Bob

The plugable was the only external USB device connected to the Yoga directly.

The behavior was the same on both USBC ports.

The Logitech and other drivers reloaded drivers had to reload when I connected to the other port. They were connected to the USB2 hub (self powered) to one of the ports on the Plugable box. Video worked great on both ports. Just no USB3 and the USB3 drive would not connect. I tried two different(USB3) external drives with USB3 cables. I did not try a USB2 drive nor did I connect the USB3 drive to the box with a USB2 cable.
I did connect the USB3 drive to the USB2 hub which was connected to the Plugable box. I could then see the USB3 driver in the device manager but not in the file manager.

Hi Ken,

Thanks for getting back with the additional information.

Apologies if the question is redundant, but can you confirm that you are only using the USB-C cable included in the box with the UD-CAM dock to connect it to your system? I ask because other cables could cause problems similar to the ones that you describe. If you are not currently using the Plugable cable, please do so to see if the behavior changes.

If using the Plugable USB-C cable does not help (or if you were using it already), our next step will be to get some additional information.

Please keep the dock connected to your system using the Plugable USB-C cable (even though some of the dock’s internal components are not working) and send the output of our diagnostic utility PlugDebug –> http://plugable.com/support/plugdebug to support@plugable.com with ‘For Ticket 214897’ in the subject line so we can match things up (please do not post the PlugDebug file in our public forum). This will allow us to examine some log files from your system to help determine the next steps.

Thank you!

Bob

That is not a redundant question from what I have read  Yes, I am using the supplied cable.

I run the diagnostics tonight when I get home.

Thanks for the excellent customer support.

Ken
