Greys are missing

I have a Macbook Air M2 with the UD-768PDZ using silicon motion software for 2 external monitors. I have noticed that I cannot see certain light gray colors - they appear exactly the same as white on the monitor. It only happens on external displays plugged into the silicon motion HDMI ports - if I plug it into the ALT port it looks fine (not great), and it looks normal on the laptop screen.

I can change the color profile in system settings but the profiles that fix the issue have other problems. If I lower the resolution from 1080p, it also fixes the issue but I should be able to use 1080p if I want.

Just wondering if anyone has also experienced this issue.

Hello,

Welcome to the Plugable forums! We’d like to help investigate this color issue while using our UD-768PDZ. I would like to share some context on how the dock is able to leverage Silicon Motion macOS InstantView software that converts a video signal through a USB connection to add additional monitors.

On the dock HDMI 2 and 3 utilize macOS InstantView to send a video signal to your Macbook Air M2. It is through this software processing that our dock is able to add additional monitors to the Macbook Air so that you’re able to achieve up to 3 monitors in total.

The M2 Macbook Air can only natively support up to x1 external monitor and this is using the HDMI 1 (Alt Mode) port for a native video connection.

The upside of using our UD-768PDZ with Silicon Motion software is that it allows your Macbook Air to exceed this 1 monitor limitation and add an additional 2 monitors. The trade-off is that the software processing that macOS InstantView needs to do is that it will affect the image quality.

I hope this context helps and please let us know if you have any follow up questions.

Thank you for your response. So is there a way to fix the issue or is there no recourse?

Hello,

I’d like to request if you could send us some photos showing this grey color issue on your monitors when in use with our UD-768PDZ dock. That way I can visually see this color issue to see if it is within normal expectations.

Could you contact us directly here from our support page: https://plugable.com/pages/support

Thanks. I opened support ticket #459594

Just as an update, I was able to work around this issue by turning the brightness down on my external monitors. Doing it via the OSD on the monitors didn’t work - I used an open source tool called BetterDisplay

Hello,

Thank you for sharing your work-around solution for this issue! We’ll do some testing of this ourselves to see if it helps other customers with a similar situation.

Thanks,
