I’m not able to get the ethernet adapter to usb type c to work. I have a 2016 macbook pro 13 inch and and older mid 2010 macbook pro. I’ve tried 2 different ethernet cables.

Could you please run the following command in terminal?
sudo system_profiler \> ~/Desktop/system_profiler.txt
This command will likely take a little while, and you may see some additional error output but that can be ignored.
