FYI the host machine has a built in Thunderbolt 4 port and the connecting cable is a certified Thunderbolt 4 cable. What I’m wondering is if it’s a worth while investment replacing my current TBT3-UDZ dock with the TBT4-UDZ dock.
Thank you for contacting Plugable support! I’d be more than happy to assist you.
Strictly speaking the TBT4-UDZ won’t offer any performance (speed) boost compared to the TBT3-UDZ except for the faster 2.5Gbps Ethernet support and the extra 2W charging (98W vs 96W). Video performance would be ultimately determined by the graphics chipset in your computer and would be the same for both docks. There are also some changes to the USB port layout, but otherwise for all intents and purposes these docks will perform identically.
The biggest advantage of the TBT4-UDZ vs the TBT3-UDZ is that for Thunderbolt 4 systems the TBT4-UDZ can support four total displays instead of two with the TBT3-UDZ (up to 4x 4K 60Hz vs up to 2x 4K 60Hz).
Unless you specifically require more displays, or can take advantage of the 2.5Gbps Ethernet connection, I suspect there is not much of a reason to upgrade from your existing dock. The 2W charging difference is quite minimal, and the USB performance would be the same.
Please don’t hesitate to let us know of other questions.
Thanks again for contacting Plugable support and best wishes!
Not anymore. I was but I believe the issue was ignorantly and unintentionally overheating it. Long story short I have a beast of a gaming laptop and two of the four heat exhaust ports are on the back and were pointing directly at the dock.
Moving the dock away by about a foot seems to have really helped.
Ah, understood! The hot exhaust definitely could have caused the dock to perform poorly but I am glad to hear it’s performing better now after being moved further away.
If you do ever run into any other troubles of course do let us know, always happy to assist.
