Cannot connect headphones in Ubuntu 20.04 (Focal Fossa)

I cannot get the bluetooth adapter working with my Ubuntu 20.04 desktop.

I grepped for “blue” in syslog and got the following:

I have bluez 5.53-0 installed, which I believe is the latest available for 20.04. Also bluez-btsco v.1:0.50-0
