USB to VGA hooked up through a hub but wont display the external monitor.

I bought a USB to VGA adaptor but I can’t get my laptop display to connect to the external monitor. The laptop doesn’t recognize the external monitor. Should I try a. HDMI to VGA? I am using an Acer switch laptop and already tried going into the display setting but no external displays are detected.
