USB 3.0 to 3.1 compatibility

I currently have a laptop with USB 3.0 and therefore plan to buy the UD-6950 USB 3.0 4k dock now, but in 1-2 years I will buy a new laptop with (most likely) USB 3.1. Is the UD-6950 compatible with USB 3.1?

Hello Walter, thanks for posting!

Yes, I would expect our dock to still work but depending on the USB 3.1 implementation, the data transfer speeds would likely be limited to speeds of USB 3.0.

To expand on this, USB 3.0 and 3.1 standards have been changing and there is some confusion surrounding them. USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 Gen 1 standards are, for all intents and purposes, the same and can support 5Gbps transfer speeds. USB 3.1 Gen 2 would be the next step up in order to support 10Gbps transfer speeds. Therefore, similarly to when USB 2.0 devices are connected to a USB 3.0 port, I would expect things to work but the dock would be unable to take advantage of the USB 3.1 Gen 2 increased bandwidth and things would be scaled down to USB 3.0 5Gbps speeds.

I hope this helps!

Thank you,

David W.
