it appears that i can’t use a thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 2 adapter on this device through my late 2016 macbook pro. I get the message “cannot use thunderbolt accessory, thunderbolt accessories are not supported on this mac” but when i use that adapter on the internal usb c port it works fine. hmmmmmmmm

You cannot connect the Thunderbolt adapter to the dock, the USB-C port is just that, USB-C only. But since your MacBook has more than one Thunderbolt 3 port, you could connect the adapter to one of those for your Thunderbolt 2 devices!
