To your question, the behavior you describe is not expected and I do not believe you have missed anything. While 3rd-party adapters or cables can and do work with our dock, we can however only guarantee the performance of our own products.
That said, given your description of the behavior we will want to examine some log files from your system to help determine the next steps. If you would, please send a System Report (instructions below) to email@example.com with ‘Ticket 219087’ in the subject line so we can match things up. Please also include the Amazon Order ID number for the dock purchase, available from amazon.com/orders (please don’t post either in our public forum).

System Report Instructions:
- Choose the Apple Menu -> About This Mac.
- From the window that appears, click on the ‘System Report’ button.
- A System Information window will appear. From the application menu bar, click on File -> Save… to save the information to a file.
- Attach the saved file to your direct email to firstname.lastname@example.org
