Random Hub Disconnect

I purchased the
Plugable 10-Port USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Hub with 48W Power Adapter --it randomly disconnects/ reconnects hard drives and devices and will not work at all with some of my USB devices. I’m using a new macbook pro, running El Capitan. I’m considering just sending it back via Amazon, but I thought I’d check with you first. Is this a defective unit or am I completely missing something?
