Hi Jerome,
Thanks for the quick feedback.
In OS X 10.7, the drivers seem to have been installed correctly, as the output in the Terminal window is almost identical to what is shown on the installation page mentioned by you (see my initial message).
I also tried the installation, cable and attached GPS tracker on a different computer (Macbook Pro), but to no avail - same situation.
Finally, I installed the drivers in Windows XP, running under VMware Fusion. In fact, as soon as the cable is plugged in, Fusion asks whether it should be used for Mac or Windows. When selecting Windows, the device is recognized. However, in device manager, an exclamation mark is shown for the Prolific 2303 entry (“device cannot be started/initialized (Code 10)”. Likewise, the GPS tracker is not recognized by any of the software I am using.
Perhaps the cable is broken. On the other hand, I am wondering why system profiler still reports the cable as “version 3.00” instead of “4.00”:
Produkt-ID: 0x2303
Hersteller-ID: 0x067b (Prolific Technology, Inc.)
Version: 3,00
Geschwindigkeit: Bis zu 12 MBit/s
Hersteller: Prolific Technology Inc.
Standort-ID: 0xfa210000 / 4
Verfügbare Stromstärke (mA): 100
Erforderliche Stromstärke (mA): 100
Regards,
Jan
P.S. Just tried the whole procedure on my wife’s MacBook Pro (still running Snow Leopard): did not work, either. Actually, system profiler showed similar results as above (Version 3.00). So, I guess the cable is broken. Rather than getting a new cable, though, I will probable look for a newer model of a GPS device which has a direct USB connection, or one which can be mounted as a device.
