Trying to use usb 2.0 ethernet adapter on a win 2000 pro, I opened the win2kxp folder and tried to instal, I get 1628:failed to complete installation

There’s a couple of reasons you get a 1628, one being the Windows installer version on your system being older than the one that the driver package was created with. Microsoft addresses this in the article at the following link:

Another reason for the 1628 could be that the installer has become corrupt. You can download the package directly from ASIX here:
