Can you use a longer (6ft) USB Type B cable to connect the Plugable USB 3.0 7-Port Hub as long as the new cable is USB 3.0 ready?
Or do you have to use the USB Type B cable that cam with the Hub?

Hi Michael,

Thanks for posting your question here! One of the limitations of moving to USB 3.0 from USB 2.0 is cable length. Long cables cause errors. Unlike USB 2.0, USB 3.0 is very sensitive to errors. If long cables are used with USB 3.0 devices, the errors caused by the cable length could cause the device to drop to USB 2.0 mode and transfer at this slower rate or could cause disconnects.

Please note that it is not the hub that is not capable of working with long cables, but that long cables available in the market are not error free and this causes issues. If the cable provides error free communication, it will work with the hub irrespective of how long the cable is. In practice finding a long cable which works without issues is very hard. We have had many customers who buy long USB 3.0 cables and have had trouble when connecting a USB 3.0 device (not just our hub) with it. We have not had a single report of a customer having good experience with a long USB 3.0 cable.

We do not recommend using long USB 3.0 cables because of the above reason. To avoid any issues we do not provide longer USB 3.0 cables with any of our products. If you want to buy a long USB 3.0 cable, please do go ahead and try it out. Please remember that if you see issues because of the cable, there is nothing we would be able to help to resolve the issue. A USB 3.0 A to B cable is required to connect the hub to the system.

We never want customers stuck with products they are not happy with. If you get a long cable that does not work well with the hub and you do not prefer to use the hub with the original cable supplied with it, please do feel free to use the 30 day hassle free return policy to return the unit to amazon for a refund.

Hope the above information helps! If you need any additional information, please do feel free to shoot us an email at support@plugable.com. We are here to help!

Regards,
Roze
