Thanks for the post! Based on what you’ve said (and please correct me if I’m wrong), it sounds like you’re trying to connect an HDMI output from your adapter to a DisplayPort input on the monitor. If that is correct, then unfortunately that won’t work. While it is possible to convert from HDMI to DisplayPort, it requires an active adapter (which are typically more expensive than a cable). The cable you’ve described is most likely designed to work the other way, going from a DisplayPort output to an HDMI input.
Since your monitor also has a VGA port as well, the easiest solution is to use an HDMI to VGA adapter like this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00H4J5B9U
