Win 8 NVIDIA driver update causes UGA-2K-A to fail

On Saturday morning Windows Update (running Windows 8 Pro) delivered a driver update for the NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M video card in my Dell XPS 15z. This caused the Plugable UGA-2K-A to no longer function (LED only lights for a moment, main display also blacks out or flashes). I tried two different UGA-2K-A devices and both had the same behavior.

Doing a “Rollback Driver” on the NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M Driver solved the problem, and the Plugable UGA-2K-A is working again fine. Although I am now working again fine, this is rather concerning behavior which should be investigated. If I were to re-install Windows 8 from scratch, I’m not sure how I could get back to the older NVIDIA driver.

I’m running the 7.0 DisplayLink driver, but I also tried going back to 6.3M1 and the issue still occurred.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for posting you experience and solution here. We’ll likely see others affected by this, so it’s great to get the heads up!

Thanks,
Jerome.

I also found that just doing the “Rollback Driver” isn’t enough, as Windows Update will again automatically update the driver at its next opportunity. Once you roll back the driver, you have to go back to Windows Update, check for updates, then “hide” the NVIDIA driver update so Windows Update won’t try to install it again.

Update: I just tried the new 7.0M2 driver from DisplayLink, but same problem still occurs.

Hi Peter-

Thanks for keeping us in the loop on your results, we really appreciate it!

We’ll be sure to pass the info along to DisplayLink as well.

If you have a moment to post the driver version you’re running, I’ll look into finding a mirror for it in case anyone else needs the older stable version.

Again, thanks, you’re a scholar and a gentleman!

The driver that seems to work that I’m running now is:

NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM v 1.2)
Driver Provider: NVIDIA
Driver Date: 6/21/2012
Driver Version: 9.18.13.286

Hi Peter - thanks again for the report and great information on versions that work!
We’ve included a link to this thread in our latest post with Windows 8 updates:

For the benefit of others - Peter reports that DIsplayLink’s just-released 7.0 M3 driver has resolved the particular problem he was seeing with the latest nVidia driver on Windows 8.

You can get the latest here:

We’re still tracking a few more Windows 8 issues, but 7.0 M3 appears to resolve several of the big issues.

I have had a similar problem with my DELL XPS 15.
