usb to Ethernet adapter for a 7" android tablet - need a driver please

I purchased a USB to Ethernet adapter for my Droid tablet v2.2. There is no driver for my Droid on the CD. I found a driver through this site but don’t know how to install it on my tablet. The adapter is the USB 2.0 Ethernet Adapter. I need Ethernet due to my job of programming devices via an Ethernet cable. Did I purchase the wrong adapter?

Hi - Thanks for posting! Android platforms can vary a lot, depending on what major version and what drivers the phone/device maker may have custom built into the kernel. So there is no blanket answer, unfortunately. Can you link to exactly which Android device you have?

It sounds like you have our gigabit ethernet adapter: http://plugable.com/products-usb2-e1000/

That’s probably not the best for Android, because you will need to to compile a new kernel module, along the lines of these steps (but adapted for the Android kernel development environment): http://plugable.com/2010/10/18/howto-…

If you’re a developer, it may be doable, and we’d love to hear back how it goes. But for normal Android users, it’s not the best option.

What we’d recommend for you is to buy our less expensive $15.95 10/100 adapter (http://plugable.com/usb2-e100/) which has a chipset which should, on at least some Android systems, have a driver already on the device and “just work”.

If you’re willing, could you buy the USB2-E100 (the 10/100 adapter), try both, and let us know here what works out for you?

Returns (for the one which does not work) are easy within 30 days: http://www.amazon.com/gp/css/returns/…

The information about what works for you might help others with other Android devices.

Thanks for letting us know, and for being willing to dig a little here to find the best solution for your Android device.

Best wishes!
Bernie

Hi Bernie,

The Plugable USB 2.0 Ethernet adapter I purchased is the one you suggested I purchase. I’m not sure why my post ended up under the other adapter. When I plug it in, my tablet recognizes that it is there, but during the “Config wired interface” I get a “Fail to config ethernet interface”. The linkage status says “Link detected yes. Speed 100Mb/s. Duplex: Full” Is there some setting I need to put into my tablet that will help it set up the configuration for the ethernet? I have downloaded the driver (it is not on the CD) but don’t know how to proceed with it.

Thanks in advance for any information you may be able to provide. I opened the “read me” for the driver, but it still says I will need to compile the driver. I have an IT background and am willing to give it a try.

I was able to get it to work this morning but the connection is intermittent. May be the Droid.

Hi Diana - Thanks for the update! If you can say, what did you change to get the connection working at all (even intermittently)?

Thanks!
Bernie

Hi Bernie,

I connected the other end of the Ethernet cable to a DSL modem instead of my Laptop. It may have been a firewall issue with the Laptop. I’ll keep testing and keep you posted.

Hi.
I use Plugable usb 2.o ethernet adapter with my Toshiba Trive Android 3.2 with no

drivers all include in kernel from Toshiba.

I also use this adapter with my Asus TF101 pad with Android 4.0.03 same in this plug and play, need no drivers.

Hi baldurmag,

I recently purchased a Toshiba Thrive and a usb ethernet adapter which had a cd driver. I went and downloaded the driver onto my thumb drive and the tablet doesn’t have the right application to recognize the driver. I am curious about the adapter that you use with no need for a driver. May I ask you what exactly the name of this adapter is and model number so I may purchase it? Is it from Toshiba?

Hi all.

My first use was Linksys by Cisco USB Ethernet Adapter Model USB300M, this unit works .
First I upgrade my Toshiba Thrive to Android 3.1, and after this upgrade all works fine.

Hi sudie,

If you have Toshiba Thrive with Android 3.2.1 or higher, it has inbuilt support for our Plugable USB 2.0 to Fast Ethernet Adapter USB2-E100. No rooting or installation is required.

You only need to plug in the Plugable USB 2.0 to Fast Ethernet Adapter USB2-E100, connect a live Ethernet cable and wait for a couple of minutes for auto-configuration of the network settings. The Link and Power LEDs on the device will light up and you will have connectivity.
