USB-C Docking Station randomly disconnecting/reconnecting

I have a Dell XPS13-9350 connected to a Plugable USB-C Docking Station. One of these: https://plugable.com/products/ud-ultcdl/

I am having trouble with the Docking station randomly disconnecting and then immediately reconnecting. Sometimes it will happen every few minutes, sometime it may go for a couple of hours before disconnecting. It always reconnects.

I am using the cable supplied with the docking station to connect the XPS13 and Docking Station via the USB-C ports.

The Docking Station is connected to:

  • 1 GB Ethernet Port
  • LG Monitor, resolution set to 1920 x 1080 via HDMI (HDMI 2K port)
  • ASUS Monitor, resolution set to 2560 x 1440 via HDMI (HDMI 4K port)

The system is running DisplayLink Manager version 8.4.3026.0

I have gone to Dell’s support site and updated my BIOS and all drivers to their latest released versions. The display chip is an Intel Iris Graphics 540 running driver version 21.20.16.4664.

I have gone into the USB power settings and turned USB selective suspend off.

I’m at the end of my rope here and will dump the dock station if I cannot fix this issue. It’s a shame, I think it’s a nice product. Any suggestions?

Any news on this?

The issue turned out to be a collision with the WiFi system. Turning off WiFi when the laptop is plugged into the dock solved the problem. Rock solid operation now.

Hello Brian,

That is great news to hear.

For anyone else encountering this kind of Wi-Fi issue we’ve written this blog post:
