USB Bluetooth adapter randomly stops working after windows update

PLUGABLE USB 2.0 BLUETOOTH ADAPTER randomly stops working and requires unplugging and re-plugging to resume functionality. This started to occur after the recent windows fall 2017 creators update. Before that it has been working flawlessly. Possible driver issue?

Hi Charles,

Thank you for posting about your Bluetooth adapter. It does sound like the Creators update caused a driver issue. It is very common for Windows update to revive old drivers or enabled disabled Bluetooth adapters during a major update, and that is probably what happened here.

Could you run our diagnostic program? It will gather device information and installation logs that will help me understand what happened.

To do this, please plug the adapter into your computer, then go to this page, and follow the instructions there:

http://plugable.com/support/plugdebug

When you run the program, it will create a zip file on your desktop with your computer name and the date. Please send that file directly to our support email address at support@plugable.com.

Please put “For Ticket #201720” in the subject line.

Thanks!

will do, thanks.

Note to clarify, when i say “Randomly” I mean it works fine, and then maybe after an hour or 2 of use, it will just randomly stop working and it doesn’t seem to be caused by any specific actions that I have noticed. Unplugging and replugging gets it working again but it will cut out again a few hours later.

This issue appears to be resolved, so I will close this thread. If there are any questions or other issues, please feel free to contact us directly at support@plugable.com or open a new thread.

We worked with Charles by email and it looked like Windows had changed the sleep setting for the adapter during the update and that is what was making the adapter disconnect.

The following instructions seemed to resolve the issue:

  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.

  2. Click Bluetooth to open the Bluetooth section.

  3. Double-click on Broadcom BCM20702 Bluetooth 4.0 USB Device to open its property dialog.

  4. Select the Power Management tab.

  5. Remove the mark from “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”

  6. Click OK and close Device Manager.
