UD-3900 almost killed my video card?

Out of the box, I plugged a UD-3900 docking station to my HP laptop and plugged a Sharp 43’’ smart TV. Right after, when trying to project to the smart TV, when I enter F4 I get a message saying “Your PC can’t project to another screen. Try reinstalling the driver or using a different video card”.

My extended desktop on the smart TV was working just fine right before plugging the UD-3900 docking station. What the hell happened?

Hi Aldo,

Thank you for posting, and I would be happy to help with your new docking station!

A quick note up front, our dock cannot physically affect the internal graphics adapter in your system, so most likely there is a software issue at play. Based on your description of the behavior, our first step is to completely reset the dock and perform a clean, manual install of the latest version we recommend of the required DisplayLink driver to help ensure they are both in a good state. If you would, please follow these steps:

  1. Disconnect the dock from the system and please remove the power cable from the dock so it turns off completely (this is important so the unit resets). Please keep it disconnected until the last step.
  2. Uninstall any and all software with ‘DisplayLink’ in the title that is present from within the Control Panel -> Programs and Features. Don’t worry if these entries are not present or if the process does not work, just move onto the next step
  3. Download and run the DisplayLink Installation Cleaner utility, found here –> https://s3.amazonaws.com/plugable/bin… and ensure it displays “Cleaning Complete” when done (video walk-through if you need it -> https://youtu.be/AcVV1gD_FvI)
  4. Once the Cleaner has been run, reboot (even if not prompted to)
  5. Now download and install the 8.4 M2 DisplayLink software, found here –> https://s3.amazonaws.com/plugable/bin…
  6. Reattach the power cable to the dock first. Once the dock is powered on, reconnect it to your system. If the device is not detected, please reboot the system.

Once complete, Windows should automatically extend or duplicate your internal laptop display to the Sharp HDMI TV connected to the dock (typically you do not have use a hot-key like F4 to enable this behavior).

Please let us know if that helps!

Bob,

The link you provided for the DisplayLink Software is for version 8.4 M2. However, on DisplayLink website’s there’s a newer version, 8.5 M1. Should I install the latter?

Best,
Aldo Álvarez M.

I installed 8.5 M1, did a lot of driver updates and reboots, even contacted HP and everything is working fine now.

Hi Aldo,

Thanks for getting back with the updates and I am glad to hear things are now working as expected. To your previous question, we do additional vetting on each release of the driver from DisplayLink before recommending it to our customers, so on occasion the version we recommend will be different from the latest DisplayLink provides. If everything is working properly, it is not a problem to have a newer version.

Thank you,

Bob
