Plugable UD-3900: How to wake laptop from sleep using either mouse or keyboard?

Hello,

I have just installed this docking station to use with my laptop. I’m very impressed with it, and it works very well, except for one problem.

I typically use the laptop with the lid closed, and use it using a wired mouse and keyboard. When the laptop is in sleep mode, clicking the mouse or hitting a key on the keyboard doesn’t wake it up. I have to open the laptop lid, and press the power button to wake it up. The laptop is a Lenovo W541 running Windows 7.

I’ve verified that for the “Power Management” settings for the keyboard and mouse, the option “Allow this device to wake the computer” is checked. When directly connected to the laptop, I can use the mouse and keyboard to wake up the laptop.

This question was already asked here, but it wasn’t fully answered:

Can you help?

Many thanks,
Paul

Solved.
My PC had gone into hibernation shortly after going into standby.
Clicking a mouse button brings the laptop out of standby.

Hi Paul,

Thank you so much for reaching out to us, I am sorry that you have been experiencing issues, but I would be happy to assist!

Thank you for sending over all of this great troubleshooting information, as well as showing the different threads you have been able to pull information from, its good to rule out repetitive information!

I do what to let you know that not all laptops or systems allow HID devices to wake the system from sleep, and it is entirely up to the manufacturer, and not the operating system. Lenovo’s also have a very tricky power management system, and they use a lot of proprietary drivers to facilitate the power management, which could cause waking from dock and HID devices not available as an option.

One of the first things we can accomplish to see if the issue will be rectified is to turn of the USB Selective Suspend option. Here is a guide that will help walk you through accomplishing this –>(https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials…)

If this does not solve the issue, then we may be able to tell the dock to not power off when the host system sleeps, to do this, you would open device manager, locate the dock under the USB devices (Usually it is called the “Generic Super Speed USB Hub”) and perform these steps:

  1. Right-click on each Generic SuperSpeed USB Hub option
  2. Select Properties
  3. Head to the Power Management tab
  4. Un-check “Allow the Computer to turn off this device”
  5. Press OK, and Apply. Put the system to sleep, and test to see if it wakes properly.

Let me know if you have any questions, or if this garnishes any immediate results!

Thank you for your patience,

Hello Marc,

Many thanks for the message.

Device Manager has an entry under ‘USB Display Adapters’, identified as ‘Plugable UD-3900’. This is for Windows 7. This entry has no Power Management tab when I right-click and then select Properties.

Hi Paul,

Thank you for getting back to us, and attempting to resolve the issue! Based on your picture and description, it looks as if you looked under the USB Display Adapters, instead, look for “Generic SuperSpeed USB Hub” under “Universal Serial Bus Controllers” and then follow the original instructions I posted.

Let me know if that works!

Thank you,
Marc

Sorry Marc,

I hadn’t noticed that you responded to my last message.
There is no entry “Generic SuperSpeed USB Hub” under “Universal Serial Bus Controllers”. I’ve attached a snapshot of what I have available.

Further, I noticed the following problems:

  • When I put the laptop into standby, I can’t use a mouse click or a keyboard keytap to bring it out of standby. This might be related to not being able to access the device driver. Since I use the laptop in “closed lid” mode, it means I have to open the latop to press the power button to wake it up.
  • When I bring the laptop out of standby, it takes about 90 seconds before the login screen is displayed on one of the two connected monitors.

None of these two issues are showstoppers, and once the laptop is back out of standby, it works flawlessly.

Many thanks,
Paul

Hello,

Any response to this issue?

Many thanks,
Paul

Hi Paul,

I apologize for the completely late lack of response, when utilizing our GetSat tool, we normally have specific emails that let us know to update the individual ticket, as well as the GetSat thread. Most of our communications via GetSatisfaction are followed up via email, so most responses on the thread are only initial looking for additional information, and then are handled through our support email.

On your individual system, the two items that are listed as “Generic USB Hub” should be the two items that you are right clicking, selecting properties, then power management, and then making sure the"Allow this device to wake" is checked. If this has been accomplished, and still you are not able to wake the system with the lid closed, this most likely indicates that your system and USB host controller do not allow USB hubs to wake the system. This can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. I am sorry that this particular feature creates such a slow down, but there is no software or hardware modifications we can make to the hub to bypass the systems USB Host Controller settings.

I hope this information helps, let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns. If you would like to contact us directly, you can do so by sending a response to support@plugable.com
