laptop performance declines when using hub

I have a Yoga 720-151KB with a Nvidia GeForce GTX GPU. When running the USB 3.0 hub with two ViewSonic LCD monitors, I have very laggy performance, especially with Microsoft programs (does not occur with laptop unplugged from hub). Examples include Outlook, Word and Excel flashing, blinking interfaces, cursor disappearing, show refreshes, and hanging UI’s. This is regardless if i am running a lot of programs or not. This is supposed to be a good PC, but in the hub it’s quite frustrating and volatile. See the image attached - outlook has sat like this the whole time I wrote this. Any help appreciated.

Hello Mike, thanks for posting! I am sorry to hear of this behavior and I will be happy to help.

Thank you for the description of the issues you are seeing. Regarding the Microsoft Office performance, Microsoft speaks to similar issues in a blog post here –> https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/o… where this occurs with 32-bit Office installations and not just limited to using our docking station. This may or may not be relevant depending on the version of Office that is installed.

Microsoft mentions a few steps to mitigate this behavior and one that we have seen success using is to Ensure hardware graphics acceleration is enabled:

Start any Office application
Click the File tab, then Options
Then click the Advanced group
In the Display section, ensure that the Disable hardware graphics acceleration check box is cleared, as shown here:

Please let us know if checking the hardware acceleration settings help or not and we will go from there.

David, thanks for the reply. I have already tried this, but so far it’s not working. Any other ideas? I only have this behavior while using the hub.

Hold that thought, I had it backwards and had the box checked. Seeing how this works…

David, see the uploaded image from outlook. After unchecking the box, the interface is not drawing, it just hangs (it’s still doing it now).

Hello Mike, thanks for the replies. You mention this only happens when our dock is connected? If you disconnect the dock and connect one of your monitors directly to the system (if possible) does Outlook and other Office apps work OK?

Pending that information we’ll want to proceed by reinstalling the DisplayLink drivers and running the DisplayLink cleaner tool to make sure that the software used by our dock is in a good state. To do so, please follow these steps:

  1. Disconnect the dock from the system and please remove the power cable from the dock so it turns off completely (this is important so the unit resets). Please keep it disconnected until the last step.
  2. Uninstall any and all software with ‘DisplayLink’ in the title that is present from within the Control Panel -> Programs and Features. Don’t worry if these entries are not present or if the process does not work, just move onto the next step
  3. Download, extract and run the DisplayLink cleaner tool, found here –> https://s3.amazonaws.com/plugable/bin…
  4. Once the Cleaner has been run, reboot (even if not prompted to)
  5. Now download and install the 8.4 M0 DisplayLink software, found here –> https://s3.amazonaws.com/plugable/bin…
  6. Reattach the power cable to the dock first. Once the dock is powered on, reconnect it to your system which will trigger the final portion of the installation

thanks for the post.

I followed instructions and am seeing how this will work.

I do know that another persistent issue I am having right now, that only happens using the hub, is that my mouse cursor disappears in certain places within Microsoft word documents. It is extremely frustrating because i cannot click the things i need to - it seems to happen around formatted text and images. I have a video of this happening, but dont see how to post the file. I have searched many times for a solution to this with no luck.

Hi Mike, apologies for my delayed reply. Unfortunately I do not have steps to advise for this behavior since it is likely related to the Microsoft article that I had mentioned previously. The ultimate fix may be installing the 64bit version of Microsoft Office.

I am sorry that I do not have additional steps to advise to resolve this behavior. We can certainly assist with a return for full refund, if you’d prefer, since we don’t want you to be stuck with the dock. Please just let us know if your are interested in a refund and we can contact you directly to facilitate that process.

Thank you,
