Having to pair headphones again every time adapter switches computers

I have been carrying the USB-BT4LE adapter with my headphones so that I can use them with both my work laptop and home desktop. Both PCs have the latest driver as of July 16, 2016. The headphones pair easily enough, and it automatically pairs again if I leave the adapter in the same computer. My headphones can pair with 8 devices, and it can switch to my phone’s Bluetooth just fine.

However, every time I plug the adapter into computer #2, my headphones will fail to automatically pair, even though it has successfully paired before. I end up having to remove my headphones from the Bluetooth devices list and add it again. When I return to using the adapter in computer #1, I have to do the same thing again. This makes it so that I have to newly pair my headphones every time I switch the adapter to another computer. I would like to be able to have my headphones automatically pair instead of newly pairing each time I switch. Is there a fix for this? Thanks in advance.

Hi Winni,

Thank you for posting about your Bluetooth adapter. I’m sorry for the hassle of having to re-pair the adapter each time.

This situation comes about because of the way Windows handles Bluetooth devices.

When you remove the adapter from a Windows computer, Windows removes its drivers from memory to make room for other things.

When you plug the adapter in again later, Windows reinstalls the driver for the adapter and this resets the automatic pairing process. About the only way to work around this would be to get an adapter for each computer and just leave it plugged in all the time.

I’m sorry I can’t be more helpful with this.

That’s what I was afraid of. Oh well, thank you for your help, David!

You are welcome!

I found that restarting my computer, even without removing the adapter, causes the same issue. Is this behavior expected?

Unfortunately, yes. To Windows rebooting has the same effect as removing the device and plugging it back in again. It reloads the drivers and this resets the pairing information.
