Does the USB 3.0 Docking Station work w/ Windows8? If not when?

When will the Plugable UD-3000 USB 3.0 Docking Station for Windows PCs support Win8? I read that it was not recommended for Win8 pending driver updates. When can we expect them?

Hi John,

Thanks for posting! We have “not recommended for Windows 8” on our listing for the UD-3000 (http://plugable.com/products/ud-3000/ ) right now for two reasons:

  1. Microsoft’s Windows 8 stack is struggling with issues on Intel USB 3.0 host controllers. Lots of devices are affected (e.g. devices not working, or working only at USB 2.0 speeds), but particularly for multi-function USB docking stations will not work. Installing Intel’s Windows 7 stack on Windows 8 fixes the issue. Unfortunately, it’s an involved process. We expect a Windows 8 update from Microsoft to fix the problem eventually, but don’t have a timeframe on that yet. Here are some more details on this issue:

  2. Separately, DisplayLink is actively updating their drivers to fix new issues that have cropped up with Windows 8. Here’s the details on that: http://plugable.com/2012/10/27/window… DisplayLink’s new 7.0 M3 improves things, but we’re still hoping for some additional fixes in the next (December) release

Between those issues (but mostly #1), we can’t recommend using these with Windows 8 for now. Again, hopefully in a few weeks the situation will be better.

I know you already have, but for the benefit of others - just email us at support@plugable.com if you’d like to be notified when these driver issues clear up and we begin recommending Windows 8 with our hardware.

Thanks for your understanding!
