Display wont work through usb hub to laptop

I have 2 USB 2.0 to VGA/DVI adapters and only 1 usb port on my laptop. I can plug in one directly and it works fine however if I plug in a USB hub to the one port and attempt to plug in both adapters, neither work. Is this by design? Is there any way to get this to work over a usb hub?

Hello Darren - Is this a Plugable branded USB hub? Please perform a USB hub reset to see if this helps by doing the following:

  1. Disconnect USB hub from power and computer and wait for 120 seconds (also disconnect all peripherals from USB Hub)
  2. Connect USB hub to power only and wait for another 10 seconds
  3. Connect USB hub to computer and test all USB ports with a simple USB device such as a wired mouse or keyboard
  4. Now connect your display adapter and test

No. This is a Plugable USB 2.0 to VGA / DVI / HDMI Video Graphics Adapter for Multiple Monitors up to 1920x1080 model UGA-165. The issue is trying to use this device for another monitor but through a generic usb hub due to the laptop only having ONE usb port on it. The one port is used by the hub to connect my mouse and keyboard and other peripherals. I connected the UGA-165 adapter to the USB hub, which is connected to my laptop, in hopes of gaining another monitor through it but it does not work. The device draws power but will not display another monitor over that device. If I plug the device to the one usb port on the laptop directly, it works. This makes be think that it does not work over USB hubs which is what I’m trying to determine here.

Just to confirm: Did the USB reset not work? Or is it an USB powered USB hub (no power supply)?

?? Please reread. I’m not using a usb hub manufactured by your company. I am only using the display adapter which is plugged into a generic usb 2.0 hub unrelated to ‘plugable’.

Understand, but I was asking if the non Plugable USB hub is either USB bus powered, or if it has an external power supply that connects it to power.

Our display adapters should work with other branded USB hubs as well. Can you please supply me with the make and model of the USB hub?

Gotcha. The usb hub is strictly usb powered. It is a sabrent 4 port usb 2.0 hub with individual power switches. The display device does light up when plugged into it so it appears to be getting power.

Strange! Have you tried/tested with all USB ports on the USB hub with nothing else connected?

If so, please let me know and we will discuss this further via direct responses away from this forum.

Hi

I’m planning to have a 7port USB3.0 Hub (25w)

My inquiry is opposite to the situation here, does the 7port USB hub (Plugable) compatible with non-plugable (generic) USB to DVI video adaptor?

Thank you,
