Clone a display on Linux using a USB display adapter

Hello, I would like to clone a display on Linux using a USB Display adapter. Can you suggest if this is possible, and how?

Hi Cliff,

Thanks for your question, we’ll be happy to help. So, the short answer is that there is not an easy way clone a USB display and a PCI graphics display in Linux. The full story is more complex. We’ve done it here with two USB displays with Ubuntu 11.10 and Unity.

If you’d like more specific details, let us know more about your system detail like the Linux Disto, graphics hardware you have and the make and model of system.

Thanks,
Jerome.

Plugable Technologies

Hi Jerome,

This is an embedded system running a 500MHz PXA270 ARM CPU and the OpenEmbedded Linux distro. The PXA270 implements a simple framebuffer display interface. So we would like to mirror/clone the primary PXA270 display on a Display Link USB display.

Thanks,
Cliff

Hi Cliff,

Here’s link to a post with some more information about mirrored displays in Linux. Although with enough effort, it’s not impossible, it’s definitely not straight forward either. With the added challenges of the embedded distro and ARM CPU, it’s a major effort and not one we have any experience with.

I hope this helps, sorry I don’t have better news.

Thanks,
Jerome.
