Allow USB-C PD to be toggled in software

Hi there,

I was wondering if it would be possible to achieve the ability to be able to turn off Power Delivery over USB-C via a toggle in the Plugable app?

My use case is that I have two monitors connected via HDMI to my Plugable USB-C docking station (which is an awesome bit of kit by the way), which then connects to my Dell XPS 15 via the USB C cable (no Display Port output on it so can’t daisy-chain the monitors AFAIK)

I like to cycle my battery on my laptop to prolong its life, so that means disconnecting it from the power supply, which means I lose Ethernet and one output monitor (as I have to then plug one of them in directly to my laptop).

If I was able to toggle this in software then I wouldn’t need to rearrange my set-up every time I want to discharge the battery.

Does this sound feasible?

Thanks

Thanks for posting, and glad to hear things are working well!

USB-C Power Delivery charging (as with charging from an AC adapter) is controlled entirely by the host system’s charging controller. One way to put it is that the charger is not “pushing” power; rather it’s only providing what the host system wants to pull.

Some system OEMs include software to give the user a bit of control over exactly the behavior you describe, with setting to temporarily disabling charging and/or allowing the battery to discharge to a certain percentage.

Thankfully since have a Dell, you’re probably in luck – they expose a fair amount of control in their Power Manager software. (Also can be accessed via BIOS if preferred.)

Thanks for the reply Gary.

Can’t believe I missed this option. Spent a disproportionate amount of time looking for this.

That’ll teach me to wipe the laptop upon purchase and do a vanilla install!

Cheers

Ah, that makes sense! The price we pay for the joy of a clean install right after purchase I suppose. Glad you got it sorted.

If things continue to work well as you put the dock through its paces, we’d love it if you took a moment to share your experiences with others with a brief product review on Amazon which can be done at the following link:

Certainly no pressure if you don’t have the time or inclination - the most important thing is that you’ve got a device you’re happy with!

Cheers,
Gary

Cheers Gary, happy to do the review, I posted one last week.

Thank you, much appreciated!!!
